About The Kitchen Design Centre

The Kitchen Design Centre designs and builds bespoke kitchens and cabinetry in Melbourne. We design with your lifestyle in mind, then manufacture locally and install with our own team. You deal with people who understand cabinetry from design through to fit-off.

Who we are

We are privately owned by Michael Simpson and Peter Schelfhout. Together, they bring over 60 years of design and build experience. Both are registered builders. They lead a business built on qualified cabinet makers, certified tradespeople, and a clear process from first meeting to final installation.

Our story

Michael and Peter started working in kitchens as teenagers while completing apprenticeships. They began taking on small jobs for friends and family after hours. After finishing their apprenticeships, they reunited and committed to building a manufacturing business with quality as the priority.

In 1994, they moved into their first factory in Bayswater and focused on local manufacturing under Perennial Kitchens, the manufacturing arm behind The Kitchen Design Centre. As demand grew, they expanded the factory and team. In 2006, they opened the first retail showroom in Eltham so clients could work through design decisions in person. The business has since expanded to additional showrooms across Melbourne and built a larger team that includes designers, cabinet makers, and contractors.

Designed and built in Melbourne

Local manufacturing supports better control over detail. Our factory in Bayswater builds cabinetry to suit each home, including integrated appliances, hardware, and accessories. We build components in-house, then test for fit and function before delivery. This approach supports consistent finishes and reliable installation outcomes.

We build more than kitchens. Clients often extend cabinetry into living rooms, bathrooms, laundries, home offices, wardrobes, and storage. A single design and manufacturing team helps keep the home consistent in style and execution.

Our team

Great outcomes come from strong design and strong build knowledge. Our leadership team includes qualified cabinet makers and designers with formal training in interior design. Our designers focus on practical layouts, storage planning, and finishes that work together across the home.

We also rely on a dedicated client management and installation team. Clear communication matters during renovation. You should know what happens next, who is responsible, and what decisions you need to make.

How our process works

  1. Showroom design consultation.
We start with your goals, your home, and how you use the space. We review inspiration, layout needs, storage priorities, and budget range.
  2. Home visit.
Your designer visits your home to review the space and discuss lifestyle needs in detail. We propose layout options and material directions. If you want cabinetry in other rooms, we review those areas too.
  3. 3D presentation in the showroom.
We present your design in 3D on a large screen. We work through finishes, colours, and hardware selections. We confirm costs and prepare paperwork for approval.
  4. Build in our factory.
Your designer meets with your client manager and qualified cabinet makers at our factory to begin the build. We test components to confirm fit and function before delivery.
  5. Installation.
Our installation team delivers and fits your cabinetry. We aim to minimise disruption and leave the space clean and tidy at handover.
