Selecting the Right Fridge

Designer kitchen needs a new fridge but which do you choose?

There are lots of things to consider when selecting a fridge; size and colour are just the beginning. While we don’t sell appliances at The Kitchen Design Centre, we have them on display as part of our kitchens in our kitchen showroom so you can get a clear idea of how it might work in your new designer kitchen.

In preparation for fridge shopping, one of the first things to do is figure out what’s important to you, what benefits or features are you looking for and what of these will make life easier. Analyse your current fridge to judge its strengths and weaknesses. This will help you create a wish list for when you go shopping so you don’t forget what’s important. Consider things like the type of items you store in your fridge; are you big into fresh fruit and vegetables or do you buy meat on bulk so you can freeze it? Do you want the freezer on top, bottom or side? Do you entertain a lot and want space for platters? What is your lifestyle – this will make your needs clearer.

Once you have created this list, it’s time to look at the specifications of fridges in accordance with your kitchen design and home. For example, energy efficiency is really important to people these days so choosing a fridge that has a high energy rating will reduce your power bills going forward. What are the measurements of the fridge? Will it fit in the fridge cavity with adequate ventilation? Measure your doorways to ensure you can even get it into your house! Consider which way the fridge door swings too so it opens away from the main kitchen area.

All of these considerations might seem overwhelming but with the help of your kitchen designer, you’ll be sure to find the right solution with minimal stress. If you’re unsure about the fridge as a working appliances, read online reviews to understand other peoples experience with the model you’re interested in.

If you’re a little unsure where to start exactly or simply want some friendly (unbiased advice), visit one of our kitchen showrooms to get a better grasp on the relationship between a kitchen and it’s fridge.
